Description
This ensemble piece with a hint of flamenco (featuring 2 guitars, 2 pairs of castanets, oboe, clarinet, cor anglais, trumpet and trombone) was first performed at a festival in Skelmersdale and was based on the idea of using a Spanish version of the words to the madrigal “All creatures now are merry minded” (Ahora todas las criaturas están de Pascuas” – played here on the cor anglais). The general jollity is interrupted from time to time by “admonitory chords” from the brass instruments, represented pictorially by the flamingoes after which the flamenco dances are named), but everyone is determined not to let it disturb their merry-making.
