Video:
From its first performance, Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera ‘Hansel und Gretel’ was a phenomenal success, produced at over fifty theatres in its first year alone.
This evergreen opera, based upon the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale, continues to charm audiences young and old with its buoyant musical fantasy.
This instrumental version is from the second scene of the second act:
In the forest, the children have eaten all the berries and are lost.
The Sandman appears and they their evening prayers and fall asleep surrounded by a vision of 14 guardian angels.
In this instrumental version of the duet I have provided a fully notated guitar part to go with the 2 melody instruments.
In the second verse I have also added variations in each instrument.
Additionally, if the guitarist wishes to use the chords in a different way, I have provided chord names for the guitar
(which are shown in the score and also on an additonal version of the first melody instrument part).
The pdf file contains score and parts.
The sound sample is an electronic preview.
Abends, will ich schlafen gehn,
vierzehn Engel um mich stehn:
zwei zu meinen Häupten,
zwei zu meinen Füßen,
zwei zu meiner Rechten,
zwei zu meiner Linken,
zweie die mich decken,
zweie die wecken,
zweie die mich weisen
zu Himmels Paradeisen.
At eventide I want to sleep,
Fourteen angels stand round me:
Two at my head,
Two at my feet,
Two at my right,
Two at my left,
Two who cover me,
Two who waken me,
Two who point me
The way to heaven’s paradise.
