Description

Instrumental arrangement of an Easter (or Lenten) motet by Giaches de Wert

The words of the original motet are taken from John 16:20, 21
Amen, amen dico vobis: quia plorabitis, et flebitis vos, mundus autem gaudebit;
vos autem contristabimini, sed tristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.
Mulier cum parit, tristitiam habet, quia venit hora ejus;
cum autem pepererit puerum, jam non meminit pressurae propter gaudium,
quia natus est homo in mundum.
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice.
You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come,
but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish,
for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
