Bashoniana (inspired by haikus by Matsuo Basho) for violin and bassoon

Categories: ,

Description

The tonalities that I use here are “Western equivalents” of various modes in the Japanese music systems, especially the Okinawa scale. The melodies are based on my “Haikus by Matsuo Basho” for voice and guitar
(also published by Editions de la Fabrique Musique).

In this version for violin and bassoon the qualities of the two instruments are explored, taking the rhythms of the original Haiku songs and developing them with more ornamentation, resulting in a dreamlike evocation of Japan as seen through Western eyes.
