O ever against eating cakes for 3 flutes

Description

I initially misread the title of this canon by William Hayes (“O ever against eating cares”) as “O ever against eating cakes”! Friends have agreed: “cakes it is”! So that is the title that I use ….

These variations begin with the original Hayes canon (which ventures from Ionian (ie major) into the Lydian mode (ie major with raised 4th)), followed by an ornamented minor (Aeolian) version, then a much more ornamented Dorian version and finally back to Hayes’ original modal mix.

The original words were:

O ever against eating cares
Lap me in soft Lydian airs
Soothe me with immortal verse
Such as the melting soul may pierce.
