Instrumental arrangement of the first movement of Pergolesi’s Lenten (Good Friday) Cantata on the
crucifixion of Christ, as seen by his mother Mary.
The 3rd clarinet part can also be played on an alto (E flat) clarinet (alto part, suitably transposed, is included in the pdf file)
The words of the original choral version are
“Stabat Mater dolorosa
Juxta crucem lacrimosa
Dum pendebat Filius”
(There stood the mourning mother
in tears by the cross,
while her Son hung there…)
