Description
A haunting and insistent piece for flute choir mainly in the Superlocrian mode – this is a mode which can be understood as being like the major mode except that the tonic note is raised by a semitone in comparison with the major mode.
Conversely it can be said to be like the major mode but with all the notes except the tonic flattened by a semitone.
Those used to modal changes to folk songs will recognise, in some places, a Welsh New Year’s song: Nos Galan (Deck the Hall with boughs of holly), which sometimes appears in a different key just for fun and changes its final notes like a dragon shedding its tail. This is, of course, in honour of the Welsh dragon!
