A series of variations on “The Ash Grove” based on three versions of the Phrygian Mode.
In the first half the Oboe plays the main tune with variations and the Bassoon has a countermelody.
It starts in C# Phrygian (c# d e f# g# a b)
continues with E Phrygian (e f g a b c d)
and then goes on to F# Phrygian (f# g a b c# d e)
In the second half the Bassoon takes over the main tune with different variations and the Oboe has alternative versions of the countermelody, using the same sequence of C#, E and F# Phrygian
