The composer, Komitas (whose given name was Soghomon Soghomonian) was born in 1869 in Armenia. He collected Armenian folk music and also composed folk-style music.
The original song refers to the Armenian countryside around Mount Ararat, the Ani fortress next to it, snow, clouds and Shoger’s blond belovèd.
